3 Causes of Bleeding Gums

Bleeding Gums

We’ve all been in the situation where we’re rinsing our mouths after brushing and see a little pink in the sink. It’s just a little blood, but the problems it could be pointing to can be much bigger. What some brush off as sensitivity can actually be a detrimental problem like gum disease – giving us reason to take a deeper look at the main causes of bleeding gums.

Infrequent Brushing

If your brushing is subpar, plaque will build up on the teeth. With copious amounts of plaque, bacteria creates an infection that causes the gums to bleed and experience gingivitis symptoms.

Tobacco Usage

Did you know that smokers and tobacco users are 4 times more likely to develop gum disease than a non-smoker? Smoking affects the functionality of the gum tissue, and greatly increases your chances of other problems, like tooth loss & oral cancer.

Medications

If you are on any medications like blood thinners, the blood in your gums may not be clotting correctly. This leads to easier bleeding when you are brushing.

With a regulated brushing schedule and cessation of dangerous activities like smoking, bleeding gums will begin to repair themselves and return to normal.
